Petition to Fix the Cameron Rd Project

15 organisations recently signed a letter to the Minister of Transport asking for the project to be fixed. See that letter here.

We are calling for an independent review to determine a better design that:
– is safer
– promotes better traffic flow for all users (without as many lights)
– delivers faster, more reliable public transport services
– reduces carbon emissions
– includes a safe cycleway on both sides of road (no shared paths)
– incorporates better placemaking, including tree-lined footpaths

A previous letter was sent to the Minister on 14 September 2021, following the release of information about the project under the Official Information Act and LGOIMA.

A leading NZ transport safety expert analysed the project for us and his review is here.

The Official Information release included this Memo from Waka Kotahi NZTA to Tauranga City Council 3 May 2021.

Also this feedback from BOP Regional Council on 15 July 2021… only a couple of weeks before Tauranga City Council released this design to the public.

We also received with a large number of emails and documents that show this design is not fit for purpose.

  1. Taking out parking lanes to put in bike lanes when there is ample bike lane on the footpath is madness and superfluous to requirements. Customers stop using the city shops in Tauranga when they can not find accessible parking. The only businesses that win when parking is withdrawn are shopping mall giants not strip mall shops. Definitely not improving safety. Only reinforcing men in lycra feeling that it is their right to clog early morning and busy afternoon traffic when a safe solution has already been created.

    1. For Council to haplessly repeat flawed 1960’s transportation model for Cameron Road and defining it as “future proofing” is gross deception, wasting money , increasing emissions and limiting opportunities. Honest future proofing would visualise light rail and look to 2050 and beyond.
